It was published in two parts between 1816 and 1818. It contains legends of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Bohemia, the Franks, the Huns, the Lombards, the Goths, and the Picts. The introduction explains the difference between fairy tales and sagas: "The fairy tale is more poetic, the saga is more historical in nature."
